Edisto’s been on my mind a lot lately. The island took a hard hit from Hurricane Matthew, as did the other Sea Islands between Charleston, Savannah, and St. Augustine.
I was just down there in September to teach a plein air painting workshop so the sounds and smells of the island are still fresh. This painting was the first one of the workshop, done at a friend’s house along St. Pierre Creek.
This old palmetto was nestled among a cluster of other palmettos and small trees at the base of a large pine. The late afternoon light caught across the fronds, creating a zig zag of light.
I’m hoping that both trees are still there, but hurricanes have a way of giving nature a great big ol’ hard pruning, part of the natural cycle.
