Imagine pulling out your paints and confidently mixing colors that catch the feeling of light on a crisp winter morning. No mud. Just clear glowing color.

I’ve heard from so many of you about what your challenges are with capturing light in your paintings.

Seeing the real color of the light on an object.…

Painting the correct value of a shadow or highlight…

Creating light and shadow without dulling colors by mixing in white or black…

I get it!

I used to get really frustrated with mixing colors for a subject filled with strong light and shadow only to find them flat and dull when I actually put them onto the canvas.

I couldn’t figure out what colors to use for a soft cloudy day that still would make for an exciting painting.

Or how to make the streak of light moving across the marsh look as vivid on my painting as it did in life.

Have you ever been there?

It can be really hard to connect the light you see with the colors on your palette.

I’ve been making art…and teaching art for more than 30 years and I’ve definitely struggled at times with creating form and light with color.

But I don’t get frustrated as often anymore.

Color is the most effective tool that artists have for creating the mood and experience of light moving across a landscape…and when you super-charge your paintings with LIGHT, they become magical!

Learn EVERYTHING you need to know about using color to capture the qualities of natural light in the landscape!

What changed?

I spent a LOT of time outside observing and painting the light moving across the landscape. Different times of day. Different weather. Different seasons.

And that’s when I realized that catching the light is a process that’s repeatable, one that works for any kind of lighting situation.

Following that process makes catching the light so. much. more. simple.

The great painter and teacher, Hans Hofmann said, “In the picture, color creates the light.”

In that one sentence lies the answer.

It really is that simple…color creates the light.

But understanding that is just the beginning.

The next step is learning what to do with color – the value, hue, intensity, and temperature – to create the effect of light at different times of day, weather, and seasons.

When the light changes so does the value, hue, intensity, and temperature.

Soooo………

I’ve put together what I’ve learned about how to using color to create light effects into a course, Catch the Light: Seeing & Painting Light with Color.

YOU'LL LEARN TO

• See the qualities of light

• Identify the light key or envelope of any subject
